The 2016 Nissan Maxima has been described as what a race cars is, but in a family sedan. That’s a pretty lofty statement, but recently Nissan backed it up with a beefy comparison of the BMW 328i, the Audi A4, and the Acura TLX.
According to CarScoops.com, Pierre Loing, vice president, Product Planning, Nissan North America, had this to say “We expected the all-new 2016 Maxima, with its re-engineered engine, transmission, and chassis to do well, but frankly even we were surprised by the head to head results…”
While the competition was sponsored by Nissan, it was supervised by the independent group AMCI Testing.
THE TEST
The test took place over a 1.8 mile course with all cars professionally driven by NASCAR driver Andy Lally. The cars tested were the 2016 Nissan Maxima, the 2015 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro Premium Plus Tiptronic, the 2015 BMW 328i Sedan, and the 2015 Acura TLX 3.59FWD0 with Technology package.
To ensure each car tested equally, all traction and stability controls were turned off.
When the smoke cleared, the Nissan Maxima had posted a lap time a full one second closer than its nearest competitor, the BMW 328i. What this means is that head to head, the 2016 Nissan Maxima is poised to shake up the 4-door luxury sport segment in an important way.
THE COMPETITORS
Since 1975, the BMW 3 series has been the icon of luxury sports sedan segment and plenty have challenged this dominance, only to throw in the towel. With an impressive 300hp under the hood and a respectable 4.8 second 0-60 performance, it is understandable how it has earned the reputation.
As well, the Acura TLX has been called “…one of Acura’s most fun-to-drive-sedans to date” by Edmunds.com. Well known for its light weight design and incorporation of advanced materials into its construction, the Acura TLX cast a wide shadow. The TLX is one of the Jewels of the Acura lineup and many owners may be surprised at its loss to the Nissan Maxima in this test.
Finally, the Audi A4 has always challenged the status quo. It’s a nicely designed sedan with performance and handling that have many saying it is unrivaled in its class. That is, until the Nissan Maxima. While the Audi has some impressive credentials, it’s somewhat anemic in the horsepower segment and its 0-60 times aren’t really cutting edge.
Each of these cars is a completely competent luxury sport sedan, and that makes the impressive win of the Nissan Maxima even more overshadowing of its dominance in the segment.
Set to defy the stereotype of the 4-door sedan, the 2016 Nissan Maxima is set to be the new standard. Harnessing cutting edge technology and with power and handling to spare, the car is sure to satisfy your thirst for performance as well as your need for family functionality.
There’s no reason to settle on less.
